Day's Hamburgers

This week's “Picnic Talks” is all about hamburgers, being downtown, hot fries, and loving a family-owned business - Day's Hamburgers.

Serving Las Cruces since 1932, you got to check out Day's Hamburgers as soon as you arrive in Las Cruces or if you currently live here – you got to run to 295 N Main St, Las Cruces, NM 88001 and get the Great Day with a cheeseburger and some chile cheese fries. The burgers are EXCELLENT!

In addition to burgers, Day's Hamburgers also has Mexican dishes, hot dogs, and burritos.

Day's Hamburgers is close to the Plaza and is a perfect spot to drop in and get some food before a concert, gallery event, or other events in downtown Las Cruces.

The spot is open for breakfast from 8 - 11 a.m. Day's Hamburgers is open Monday - Friday - 8 a.m. - 7 p.m., and Saturdays - 8 am - 4 pm. Closed on Sundays

Santa Fe Grill Catering Company

This week's “Picnic Talks” is a "get it" while it is still in Circle K...Santa Fe Grill. The restaurant is a staple here in Las Cruces and the food is really good...messy but good. Some of the best food is messy!!

OK...here is the story on the grill and the recent Circle K purchase. Santa Fe Grill is a restaurant within the former Pic Quik Stores, now known as Circle K, since the recent buyout of the Pic Quik stores. Santa Fe Grill leases the space within the convenience stores and once the leases end...Santa Fe Grill may not be in the Circle K stores.

Sooo...with all of that said – you need to order the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and the Chorizo, Egg & Cheese Burrito. Those two items are to die for!! Santa Fe Grill also has plate lunches, daily specials, specialty burritos, and even quesadillas. Click here to check out Santa Fe Grill's menu.

Santa Fe Grill has over six locations here in Las Cruces as well as a location in Hatch, NM. The one I visit is at 2200 Missouri Ave, Las Cruces, NM 88001. The restaurant offers carryout only but you can also order for delivery via DoorDash.

Santa Fe Grill is open daily with times varying depending on location.

Rio Grande Theater

From vintage films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show to local performances, the Rio Grande Theater is your one-stop entertainment center in Las Cruces. For the last two weekends, I have attended two great movies I always wanted to see on the big screen - 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both movies were EXCELLENT!!

So…you ask…”How is this a Picnic Talks?” Well..the theater serves WINE…and BEER. And whenever you can consume WINE and BEER…it is a PICNIC! I love being able to drink an adult beverage while watching a movie or performance. YESSSS!! You can also rent out the Rio Grande Theater and host your own indoor picnic or another event. Click here for more rental information.

The theater is at 211 N Main St in historic downtown Las Cruces – right on the Plaza. Parking is in the rear and on the street. Click here to check out the theater’s website.

My visit to Matteo's Downtown was for lunch this week and I LOVED it. Life In 'Cruces – Picnic Talks...

Your Own Picnic 2022

This week's “Picnic Talks” is all about hosting your own PICNIC!! I just had my first picnic of 2022 the other day. I was at Young Park here in Las Cruces and I loved it!! See photos to the right!

Spring is almost here and it is time to get outside and host your own picnic. Hosting your own little food fest is easy, inexpensive, healthy, and fun. If you have kids, it is really easy because you can make them do all the hard work while you just enjoy - LOL - just kidding.

Here are some tips on how to host your own picnic:

1. Purchase light foods like crackers, spreads, precooked chicken, prepared tuna, and other foods that don't require a lot of cooking or preparing. Finger sandwiches also work including sub sandwiches and then cut them into bite-sized pieces. Stay away from meats and dishes you have to bake or prepare for hours.

2. Next, grab bottled water, soft drinks, specialty drinks, and pre-made coffee drinks. Place any drinks that require refrigeration in a cooler filled with ice the night before your picnic. Stay away from mixes and drinks that require a lot of preparation. Hot coffee may be great but if it requires you to brew it - think twice.

3. Don't have a picnic basket, use a laundry basket or similar container to hold all of your goodies.

4. Next, grab any blanket – any blanket will work - you don't need a fancy one. You can even use sleeping bags to sit on. If sitting on the ground is not your thing, picnic in an area that has tables.

5. Locate an area park to have your picnic. Other locations include your own backyard, the beach, a lake, or even on your own patio or your living room. A picnic doesn't necessary have to be outdoors. It can be indoors. You can even have one in a motel or hotel room. Hell...you can even have one in the lobby of a building (if allowed).

6. Want to glam it up? Purchase some decorations at your area dollar store or party store and use them -- balloons, streamers, fancy cups and plates, etc. Make it festive.

7. Want to have music? Use your phone to provide music or stream some music from YouTube or your favorite music service. If you play an instrument like the guitar, bring it along.

8. Picnics are great anytime of the day and any day...it doesn't have to happen over the weekend. If you are off, throw a impulsive picnic in the middle of the week. Or have one at night. Laying underneath the stars is soooo relaxing.

9. Invite others to your picnic, if so desired, or just have a picnic on your own. Host your own "getaway picnic" with all of your favorite foods and drinks.

10. Lastly, take plenty of pictures and/or video. Share your picnic fun on social media!!

Now...run along and get your eat on!!
