About Life In 'Cruces...

Golden sunsets, desert breezes, amazing vistas, flowing rivers, and cool nights…this is New Mexico…also known as the Land of Enchantment.

Welcome to Life In 'Cruces, your walk through my adventures in the Land of Enchantment. Founded in 2021, Life In ‘Cruces chronicles my move from Albuquerque, NM to Las Cruces, NM. I arrived in Albuquerque back in 2009 and vowed to only stay for five years. I ended up staying for 12 years. I am now not only moving on to southern New Mexico, but also moving into the next chapter in my life. I am closing old doors and opening new ones. I am focusing on my PASSIONS, my TRAVELS, my DREAMS, and most of all MYSELF!

From documenting my cooking adventures to traveling all over the state of New Mexico, you will find all of these things and more on my own little lifestyle website – Life In ‘Cruces.

Much Love,

Nick A. Davis

Life In 'Cruces - April 2022 Recap

Happy May 1st!

Whoa!! April is over and it was an excellent month of so many events, good eats, a great holiday, sunny days, and fun nights. April was looonnnggg and I really enjoyed it.

On the work front, I worked a lot but also relaxed a lot. I got a new work tablet for Job I and this tablet is making my job a lot easier since I no longer have to use my phone. I do have to purchase a new phone because my little Moto is just not cutting it on Job II and with all the pictures/videos I am taking for Life In 'Cruces.

On the exercise front, I am so proud of myself – I am in the gym at least three times a week. I did not give up in April! I love going to the gym after work. YAY ME!!

On the food front, oh boy. I have loved me some steaks, salads, dishes out, and strong cocktails. With all of that said...I am going back to my “no meat diet” TODAY. I am also stepping back from cocktails. I just made two pitchers of iced tea and I am going to once again love water.

On the apartment remodel, I have all the things I need for the remodel. I have already started framing pictures for the bathroom and covering pillows for the bedroom.

On the life front, I am saving money once again and I am loving that. It feels funny to save more than I spend. My taxes are paid including federal taxes as well as CA land taxes. This month – I want to pay off at least one bill.

This month is all about checking things off of my many checklists and remodeling my bathroom/bedroom. Sooo...I will be at home most of this month except for next weekend – I will be in Albuquerque for Mother's Day.

Well...it is time to crush some projects before the new work week.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Sunrises and Sunsets

Happy Sunday to ME!! I am loving the sunrises here in Las Cruces. I got up a little early this morning just to see the sunrise over the Organ Mountains. I am also loving each and every sunset in this little southern town. Today…I am taking a much-needed R&R Day. It is all about relaxing, working on pictures for my bedroom/bathroom, and resting.

In other news, Happy Earth Day. I had a change in plans for Earth Day this week. I kicked off my spring cleaning and decluttering. I had to work yesterday and I decided to just come home and start cleaning. My platform bed arrived on Friday and I am so ready to put it together. But before I can enjoy my new purchase, I have to clean out my bedroom, clean the carpet, and completely redecorate. As you know…my theme is all about the 1970s. I still need to buy a few more items including a Lava Lamp and some shag rugs.

So…you know I love planning any project before undertaking one. You ask how I’m managing this remodel? I am using a free app called Evernote to chart all the items I need for my spaces as well as how I am going to CRUSH the project. Evernote is available on all platforms. I have it installed on my Macbook and I love it. Evernote also has some paid features that are handy for advanced users but I don’t need all of that. Click here for more information on Evernote.

On the decluttering front, I am still going through bags of decorations and junk I haven’t used or seen in years, If I haven’t used or displayed something in the last two years – I am tossing it. With each toss, I feel lighter and lighter.

As you know...I love decorating and changing things up in my place. So what are my remodel plans? I am remodeling the bathroom over the May 13th-15th weekend. And Yes…it is a Friday the 13th in May - OMG!! I am going to work longer during the first part of the week so I can possibly take off that Friday and do the bathroom floor that night. Then on Saturday, I will redo the cabinet and walls. Then on Sunday, put it all together I will post some before and after pictures of this remodel.

For the bedroom remodel, I am kicking it off over the May 27th-May 30th weekend - Memorial Day. I am going to skip any Memorial Day events and just focus on my bedroom since I have so much to do to refresh and recharge the space. So…on Friday, May 27th - clean the carpet in the bedroom and hallway; Saturday - put the bed up and do the walls; Sunday - create the new reading nook and put down throw rugs, and on Monday - wrap it all up. Now…you know I am going to cook something over the weekend to enjoy on Monday while I am laying in my new bed!

Well…let me get up and work on some pictures for my spaces and really enjoy my Sunday before CRUSHING this week!! Don’t forget to check out Picnic Talks this week. Click here for the latest eatery!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Spring Plans and Loving Earth

Happy Easter and Happy Week of Earth Day Events!!

Today is Easter and the sun is out and it's very pretty here in Las Cruces. I am loving today - in bed enjoying my TLC shows and then I am having brunch at D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro. I know I am going to eat grandly and have a wine flight. When in Las Cruces, you have to check out D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro at 1720 Avenida de Mesilla, Las Cruces, NM 88005. Click here to check out the restaurant’s website.

Well…Earth Day is Friday, April 22nd and this year’s theme is “Restore Our Earth.” And like other cities, Las Cruces is celebrating this event all week and weekend. I am going to start celebrating Earth Day Week starting tomorrow. I am going on a little walk around the city and snapping some pictures of nature, animals, the sky, and hopefully the moon. I love getting out and just enjoying the cool breezes and warm sun.

On Saturday, the Las Cruces Museum System kicks off its all-day celebrations at the Branigan Cultural Center and Railroad Museum. For more information, click here.

I am going to drop in and attend a few events on Saturday but I want to spend as much time outside really enjoying the Earth instead of being inside. I know I am going to enjoy the sunset on Friday and stare at the Moon for a few minutes.

In other news, I am going to read lots of books this week, write some poetry, listen to some podcasts, and just relax this week. Last week was soo busy and now it is time to relax and really enjoy not only Earth but downtime.

Happy Easter Everyone!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!Life In 'Cruces - Space, Earth, Wind, April

April Is All About Spring, Celebrating Our Planet, Rebirthing, and Loving Life

I am beyond happy to see April and all of its many events. This week has been all about Las Cruces Space Week. events and enjoying the warm weather. I kicked off space week by attending a pop-up art show on Thursday at Mesilla Valley Mall. The show was all about photographs and paintings of space elements including stars, planets, galaxies, and other space elements. All of the artwork was amazing! Ironically, I am going to incorporate some space elements in my bedroom remodel next month. I have always been fascinated with space, the planets, and stars. I am really in love with Mars and Venus. I wish I could visit Mars for a day but I know that is not possible.

Tonight, I am attending a showing of 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Rio Grande Theater. This is my first time seeing this movie in a real theater. I can't wait. Click here to check out upcoming movies at the Rio Grande Theater.

Las Cruces Space Week wraps up tomorrow at the mall with another art show, vendors, kids' events, and a few panels. It was supposed to wrap up with a tour of Spaceport America but that event was canceled. Click here to find out more information about Spaceport America.

Well..back to Earth...in a few weeks, I kick off my bathroom/bedroom remodel. I can't wait to redecorate my bathroom - the theme is "Cactus, Sand, and the Southwest". My bedroom's theme is "The 1970s Meet Space and Beyond". I can't wait to toss out old decorations and install new ones. I have been collecting new items since January and I only got a few more things to purchase before the May 8th kickoff.

Now...I am mad with the wind - the wind is the reason the Spaceport America tour was canceled. The center was going to have a few special guests fly in for the event, but the high wind caused the center to cancel the entire event. Spaceport America stated they are going to try and reschedule the event for this fall. I need to get a kite to fly since I can't tour the space center.

On the rebirthing kick...I am still sticking with my exercise/fitness plan and I am still hitting the gym every other day. I am proud of myself -- I didn't give up on Planet Fitness. I was working out earlier today and I am hitting the gym tomorrow after I get done with work. This upcoming week is going to be busy but I am still going to hit the gym after work. I am CRUSHING the gym!!

Well...I am off to love life and love the warm weather here on Planet Earth!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Work Changed My Plans

Happy April!!

Well...I was supposed to be posting this blog from LA but work changed all of my plans last week. When I booked my tickets for LA back in December, I didn't have Job IV and Job II was a lot easier. Job II now requires I travel across the entire city instead of just servicing six stores. The rep that used to cover the other stores here in Las Cruces left unexpectedly.

Job IV requires me to work on a Thursday morning unless I can move the projects to another day. Soooo...it was easier to postpone my LA trip until later this year after I get some of these work projects CRUSHED.

I really wanted to relax in LA but instead, I kicked off Las Cruces Restaurant Week on Friday. I had a tasty patty melt at a little restaurant hidden in an office building - Abraham's Bank Tower Restaurant. The restaurant is in the Electronic Caregiver building at 506 S Main St. Once there, hop on the elevator and go up the 4th floor and the eatery is in suite #434. Abraham's Bank Tower Restaurant offers a lot of American food as well as New Mexican dishes. The restaurant opens at 8 a.m. on Monday. I may eat at one or two other restaurants during this 10-day week of specials. For more information on Las Cruces Restaurant Week, click here.

After work on Friday, I went to the Fine Arts Flea Market downtown at Plaza de Las Cruces. The flea market is a monthly event that happens on the first Friday. So much art, so many food vendors, music, and lots of sunshine. I stayed at Plaza de Las Cruces for a bit and then I had to get home for a wine education Zoom call – all about Merlot. The call was so informative.

I kicked off Saturday by visiting the gym and then heading back to Plaza de Las Cruces for not only a health fair but also the weekly Farmer's Market. Oh boy...it was a busy time on the plaza. I got my blood sugar checked and it is 81. I am doing great with keeping my health in check. I had an excellent time walking, talking to folks, taking assessments, and just enjoying the warm morning with lots of sun.

Today, I am staying home and working on projects – art projects, sewing projects, computer projects, and reading projects. I know I want to cook something different for dinner.

This new week is already scheduled to the max and I LOVE IT. The Las Cruces Space Festival kicks off later this week on April 7th...click here to check it out.

I will be at the space festival and will post lots of pics on Instagram.

Life In 'Cruces - March Recap & One Year Old!!

Happy Birthday to Life In ‘Cruces -
One-Year-Old Today!

And it has been a fun and busy year of packing, working, moving, unpacking, decorating, and loving southern New Mexico. My life's 360-degree turn has been GREAT and I LOVE IT. The only thing that would make my life better is a billion dollars and cheap gasoline BUT I am not going to worry about all that.

Now for the recap…

March has been the BOMB - so many great meals and great cocktails. I kicked off the month attending the Las Cruces International Film Festival and that event was so much fun. I can’t wait to attend it next year.

You know I love restaurants and I went to many “first time for me” restaurants this month. I featured many in my Picnic Talks section of this website. Keep checking back for other restaurants I have popped in to. Click here to check out Picnic Talks.

I took Rest & Relaxation to a new level with weekends off, spa days, shopping days, and just loving ME and my self-care.

I took my photography to the next level and increased my Instagram postings. Click here to check out my Instagram.

I kicked off the First Day of Spring weekend by hanging out in Mesilla, New Mexico all day Saturday and then had a great brunch at Red Lobster on Sunday.

On the work front, I realigned my work so I have weekends off to enjoy life and focus on this website - Life In ‘Cruces.

Today, I am going to Bosque Brewery on Telshor to kick off the reopening of the bar’s patio. The kickoff is happening at 3 p.m. and I can’t wait. Click here to check out the brewery’s website.

March has been long and full of events and lots of fun. I can’t wait to have fun in April!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Spring Is Here

Happy Spring 2022!

Spring is here and I am welcoming all the things I have planned for the season! I love spring and its warm winds, sunny days, mild nights, and even its rains. Even though it doesn’t really rain here in New Mexico.

To kick off this new season, I am starting to listen to more podcasts and watch less TV. I love self-care and horror podcasts. Here are a few podcasts I got to check out:

Self Care Club - https://www.youtube.com/selfcareclub

100% Guilt-Free Self-Care -https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/100-guilt-free-self-care/id1460142083

Self Care is Sexy -https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/self-care-is-sexy/id1107798691

Welcome to Night Vale -https://www.welcometonightvale.com/

The Last Podcast on the Left -https://www.lastpodcastontheleft.com/

Ghosts In The Burbs - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ghosts-in-the-burbs/id1097650785

I love me some podcasts and I love tuning out traditional mediums like television, print publications, etc. It is great to put on some headphones, start a podcast and start walking. Happy Spring to ME!!

Recap of the weekend…the weekend is still pushing on and I have to say that Saturday was a lot of fun. I spent it in Mesilla, NM – the neighbor to Las Cruces. I visited two venues hosting the Get Lucky Music Festival. The festival is part of the Experience Mesilla weekend of events. For more information on Experience Mesilla, click here.

Check out Picnic Talks for one of the restaurants I had a great time at. Look for future Picnic Talks for other Mesilla restaurants I had a great time at.

Now…it is time for some new Positive Affirmations I came up with and following:

  1. Do ME and experience life daily with facials, good coffee, good teas, and lots of water.

  2. Don’t chase things or people who have nothing positive to add to MY life.

  3. Work harder and play harder EVERY day.

  4. Fill MY “Grateful” jar each day.

  5. See the sunset every evening.

  6. Enjoy “twilight time”.

  7. Release, repeat, release.

  8. Spend 10 minutes in a state of happiness.

  9. Enjoy a moment of silence.

  10. Ignore drama, release pain, love ME, and love MY life!

Winter is OVER and spring is here!! Yessss!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Taking a "World" Break

This week has been all about taking a break from the world. With all the war mess, Covid still hanging around, gas being over $4 a gallon, and hearing folks complain about everything…I am loving shutting all of these things out and loving my life.

I had a great time last week and this week I needed to step away from everything and work on “ME” projects including some computer projects, video projects, decluttering projects, and drinking plenty of water.

On the computer front, I got my vintage TI-99/4A computer up and running in my living room. All I need for it is a set of joysticks and of course some more games. The little computer fits in just right next to my stereo. See photos to the right.

On the video front, I made a video consisting of photos of an abandoned house in Mesilla, NM. Click here to view the video.

On the decluttering front, I am filing trash bags like mad of stuff that no longer suits me like incomplete art projects I am never going to complete, old paperwork, expired items, and just plain junk. I am preparing my place for the Big Spring Remodel coming in early May. I can’t wait. I found a great website on spring cleaning, 33 Easy Spring Cleaning Tips for a Sparkling Home, and I am using many of the tips on this page. Click here to check out the site.

So…I am loving this “break from life” and this “break from the news and Covid”. Sometimes you have to shut out the world and turn on the “all about me” mode.

Life is too short to stress about the world, gas and food prices, Covid, and other things popping off in this world.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Celebrating Wins

Yes...it is all about celebrating wins and this week has been all about “first time” things here in 'Cruces including some cool photography projects for both this website and Instagram as well as attending a few events.

I don't even know where to start – I have been loving the Las Cruces International Film Festival all week. Well...it didn't kick off until Wednesday but it feels like it has been here all week. I haven't attended a film festival in years and this one has been sooo much fun. I got to meet the director of The Lion King and I got to see a lot of indie films, shorts and even attended an animation workshop. I had to skip tonight's award ceremony because I had to come home to get some ME things done.

The Las Cruces International Film Festival wraps up tomorrow, Sunday, and I am a little sad. I wish it could run for two weeks. I love me some indie films and love filmmaking. Check out my Instagram for some of the pictures I took.

I would like to send a thank you out to Cineport 10 - Allen Theatres for hosting the Las Cruces International Film Festival. The theater is a few minutes from my house and I loved that I could run home if I needed to. Click here to check out what is playing at the theater.

Earlier today, I attended the Las Cruces Arts Fair at the Las Cruces Convention Center. The fair kicked off today at 10 a.m. I went to it first and then headed to the film festival. I love a full day of events especially when the weather is nice and warm. The fair runs through Sunday and features an array of local artists as well as artists from both New Mexico and Texas. The pieces are priced right and you will find everything from pottery to color prints. The Las Cruces Art Fair is hosted by the Dona Ana County Arts Council. Check out the fair's website by clicking here.

It has been a fun week with so much going on. I love it. I am finally back doing what I love – attending a lot of art, film, photography, and other creative events. I had to make myself come home because I still had so much to do at home including making this post.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - February 2022 Recap

The month is ending and I am both happy and sad. I am happy that spring is right around the bend and the time change is approaching quickly. I am sad to see February end because it has been a fun month with a lot of “CRUSH IT” moments including an additional job, some great eats at various Las Cruces restaurants, a lot of projects completed, and I kept up with my gym goals.

Today...I took a much-needed R & R Day to refresh, recharge, reboot, and overall reinvent myself. I worked hard this week and managed to get to the gym, declutter some items from my palace, attend a great Black History Month event, and even sleep in this morning.

My biggest accomplishment this month - filing my taxes. I do have to pay back but I'm OK because this is the last year I will be paying back.

My second biggest accomplishment – getting my movie pass for the Las Cruces International Film Festival that starts next Wednesday, March 2nd. I am beyond excited. This is my first time attending this festival and I am so ready to see some independent films as well as some student short films. Click here to check out the festival's website.

To download Las Cruces International Film Festival's schedule – click here.

So...overall...I have had a great month. No snow days, no job drama, no life drama, and nothing crazy.

Well, March is coming and I am ready to embrace it and CRUSH even more goals. I am also getting ready for my LA trip at the end of March. I am ready for a few days of R & R.

Now...I am going to work on some house projects and finish my R & R Day.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Overall Look of the Month

One Word – Unexpected!

I only have one word for this month so far – unexpected. I have had unexpected achievements this month. Achievements include working one of my “dream jobs” and crushing it, being given the opportunity to take over Las Cruces territory on another job, winning a piece of art that I really love, and getting to visit new restaurants that I am really loving.

Now...along with all the unexpected achievements, also comes a lot of juggling and having to schedule time to relax. I ain't no fool – I know I can't do everything. Sooo...I schedule R & R Days as much as I can. This weekend has been all about R & R. Today...I am attending a Facebook Live tour of south Paris and then I am having a nice at-home brunch. It is all about “ME” this weekend and enjoying my palace!

Later on today, I am going to watch some of my favorite shows and work on some art projects. You will also see a new Picnic Talks on the website as well as new photos.

As for as my new work week, I am streamlining all of my various jobs and working on a new work/life balance plan. I am excited!!

Well...I am off to my virtual stroll of south Paris!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Secret Art Garden

I can feel spring in the air...winter in Las Cruces is not that bad. The mornings are cold but the afternoons are warm and I am loving it. I am really enjoying this month – from visiting museums to attending art showings...it has all been a lot of fun. I am keeping my goal of visiting a new place or attending a new event each week.

This week I visited the Branigan Cultural Center – a cluster of three museums all wrapped up into three buildings. Between the first and second museum is an open-air space that allows you to sit and soak up the winter sun in your own “secret art garden”. You can sit and stare at various art pieces on the ground as well as on pillars around the garden.

The center is at 500 N Water Street with an entrance on Main Street in Downtown Las Cruces. Admission to the Branigan Cultural Center is FREE!! And I love free. I also love that the museums allow you to visit in person but you have to wear a mask. The Branigan Cultural Center features new and old art collections as well as monthly artist discussions. And again...admission is FREE!!

Click here to check out Branigan Cultural Center's website.

In other news, I also checked out M Phillip's Fine Art Gallery during the monthly Art Rumble event. The event happens on the second Tuesday of every month. The gallery is part of a collection of galleries located at 221 N Main St. M Phillip's Fine Art Gallery features Russian and European art as well as a few southwestern pieces. Click here to check out the gallery's website.

I ended this week today by doing my favorite thing – visiting thrift and discount stores around the city. I found a few items for my bathroom redo. I love thrift stores – you never know what you are going to find.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Picnic Talks

Happy February!!

This week kicks off me trying new restaurants under the project flag of “Picnic Talks”...each week I am going to blog about the latest “new” restaurant I am trying out. Last night, I ordered a great veggie pizza from Pastaggio's Italian Restaurant. The eatery is at 3000 Harrelson St, Las Cruces, NM 88005...right outside of Mesilla. I discovered this restaurant while driving for DoorDash back in October. The pizza is the BOMB. I had three slices last night and I saved some for dinner tonight.

DoorDash sent me a 50 percent off promo code and I jumped on the offer and ordered from this eatery. Pastaggio's Italian Restaurant's menu includes traditional Italian dishes as well as cheesecakes, ice cream, and beverages. I can't wait to eat there in person. Check out Pastaggio's Italian Restaurant's Facebook page by clicking here!

In other Picnic Talks, I had a great ribeye steak last Monday at Outback Steakhouse. Yes, I said steak and Outback Steakhouse in the same sentence. I was wanting a steak soo bad and my coworker pulled me into her car and we went. The steak was A-1! The salad was wonderful and the loaded baked potato was heaven. The next day, I returned to my meatless life. Las Cruces' Outback Steakhouse is the bomb. Usually, chain restaurant steaks are tough, but this steak was marvelous. It was cooked medium-rare, easy to cut, and was huge. To check out Outback Steakhouse, click here.

I know, I know...Picnic Talks should not include chain restaurants, but I just had to mention Outback. Mmmm...so good.

In other news...this month is short and full of events, work, and things I am CRUSHING. February kicked off with me working a lot of hours and keeping up with all the many irons in my fireplace...LOL! Now, I am kicking off this week with a few less hours but still a lot of work projects. I love staying busy.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - January 2022 Recap

Well...Happy New Year to me. January has been off the hook – so many successes but a lot of work. I have been busy crushing fitness goals, work goals, home goals, and even bill goals.

Here is the recap of my month:

  1. I landed a great price auditing job that pays well and fits in my busy schedule.

  2. I have been crushing the gym every other day and loving it.

  3. I found a great oversize monitor for my desktop computer.

  4. Ohhh...I found a great desktop computer that houses my Life In 'Cruces.

  5. I worked overtime on Job I and socked that money away.

  6. I found a great tiny home for my Deming property.

  7. I started collecting items for my bathroom remodel

  8. I am slowly rebuilding my wardrobe.

  9. I had a great Maine lobster meal.

  10. I started on my 2021 taxes – OMG!!

  11. I found a great new video editor and you will start seeing videos on this website.

I am ready for February and I am ready to CRUSH more goals and live my “simple life”!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Dinner Table

I am in love...I am in love with the gym and eating right. Yes, I said the word “love”. I have been sticking with my fitness plan and I feel great. I am going to the gym every other day and I have an increase in energy as well as an increase in the feeling of accomplishing yet another fitness goal.

I am also eating right and taking B-12 daily. Now...on the B-12 front – I know I won't see an increase in energy as of yet. It takes a few weeks for my body to reap the benefits of B-12.

As for as my Dinner Table – I am back to eating salads and veggies. I am also eating soup (non-cream based) and drinking plenty of water. I am drinking ACV at least once a day. I know I need to increase my ACV drinks and I need to drink green tea instead of black tea. I just don't like green tea as much as I like black tea.

As for as coffee – I only drink one cup per day. I am usually in a rush to get out the door and I save any extra coffee for the next day. I have stopped drinking Starbucks because of the cost. One grande coffee is now over $3.00 a cup. I am shocked and not going to pay that much for a cup of coffee.

What's for dinner tonight? Some mixed veggies, a small salad, a cup of soup, and some water. I try to eat around 5 so I am not eating late.

I really wanted to go out to dinner tonight but it is cold out and I don't really want to leave my palace. Maybe next Saturday.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Dream Life

Well...it is the middle of January and I am sort of living my “Dream Life”...I am exercising regularly, I am eating right, I'm reducing expenses, and I'm learning to relax and enjoy myself. Once the winter season is over, I will really be living my Dream Life because my travels throughout southern New Mexico will resume.

What is my Dream Life?

My Dream Life consists of doing stuff that betters me and doesn't harm me. My Dream Life consists of being happy and doing things I want to do instead of working hard for others who really don't give a damn about me. If what I am doing doesn't benefit me financially, emotionally, spiritually, and morally...I don't do it.

I spent a lot of time over the years doing things I really didn't want to do. Now, I am doing things I want to do and I'm focusing on being happy instead of “just getting by”. I embrace saying “NO” to people, things, jobs, and other entities.

Now, I love saying NO and I love that I'm in charge of my life and the things I want to do.

I still have a few things to take care of before I can really embrace my Dream Life. The only that is really stopping me from fully living my Dream Life, of course, is Covid. Rona is interfering with a lot of my travels and special events. I can't do anything about Rona...but I can do something about how I react to it – I am finding things to enjoy that hasn't been messed up by Rona.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - 5-Year Plan Update

Well...as many of you – I love planning out how to achieve my goals including daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly goals. Any goal in life is achievable if you plan correctly and most of all...do the work to CRUSH that goal. I don't believe in dreams. I believe in goals and getting the goals met. Dreams are for dreamers and I am not a dreamer...I'm a doer!!

One way I get a lot done is by following a five-year plan. Like other plans, I update my five-year plan every year and remove any goals I have already accomplished. This update is scary because it is covering not only my last year in my 40s but also my new decade – my 50s. Oh my! I still can't believe I will be 50 next year.

So here is my NEW five-year plan:

2022 (Ages 48/49) –

1. Get to my ideal weight of 135

2. Payoff the last of my bills

3. Increase traffic to Life In 'Cruces

4. Publish my memoir

5. Visit and blog about more places in Las Cruces

2023 (Ages 49/50) -

1. Develop the land I have in Deming, NM

2. Turn 50 gracefully

3. Continue my education at DACC

4. Promote Life In 'Cruces

Life In 'Cruces - Happy New Year!!

Happy Happy New Year. 2022 is here and 2021 is DONE. I can't believe it is a new year. I have to say that 2021 was a GREAT year for me. I got so much done and now I am kicking off 2022 by getting diet stuff done – meal prep, walking, going to the gym, etc. I am beyond excited about this year and all I am going to do.

Due to the weather, I spent NYE at home. I loved it – lots of bubbly and good food. Now, I am focusing on my diet and working on projects. I am really hyped about everything.

Well...back to work tomorrow and I can't wait to work hard and work on myself harder!

Today has been productive and I am ready to CRUSH tomorrow.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - December Recap and 2021 Recap

I must admit...I CRUSHED December and 2021! I achieved so many goals this year I can't even list all of them. But my goal of moving was my Number 1 goal and I CRUSHED IT!! I am beyond happy about my move, my achievements, my fitness plan, and all of the little things I crush on a daily basis.

To recap December, two words – busy but fun. I joined Planet Fitness and kicked off a fitness plan that I am excited about instead of dreading. I also made the decision to not have liposuction. I am going to tone my body without going under the knife. The surgery is too risky with Rona and all the issues hospitals are going through. I will do the work to get my body where I want it. I don't need a doctor with a degree. LOL!!

I wrapped December up with a big bow and I am ready to see it end in a few hours.

To recap 2021, one word – SUCCESS. I got a lot done this year and this has been a successful year. I overcame a few challenges, cursed some folks out, rebuilt my life, and started on a different path.

Now...I am ready to kick 2022's door in and CRUSH a new set of goals!

Somebody pass me some bubbly!!

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces - Las Cruces Christmas

Christmas is quickly approaching and I have really enjoyed several Christmas events here in Las Cruces. Check out my Christmas walk-through Mesquite Street photos from last night - to the right. I also love riding around looking at lights and decorations.

So, what I'm I doing for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day? I am going to relax both days and watch movies and shows. On Christmas Eve, I am attending the Christmas Eve in Old Mesilla event. The event is featuring thousands of luminarias, caroling on the Plaza, and a mini Christmas concert. For more info, click here.

On Christmas Day, I am sleeping in and then I'm having a fondue party and a wine tasting. I am even going to make a vegan dessert. I'm thinking of a chocolate cream pie or a vegan pumpkin cake. For more info on vegan desserts, click here.

For more vegan dessert recipes, check out All Recipes by clicking here.

On Sunday, I am going to sleep in all day and just relax. Enjoy a peaceful Sunday without people – LOL!!

Life In 'Cruces - Exhale

I can't believe it is the last month of the year. I have to say 2021 has been a busy one for me. I can finally exhale since the move to Las Cruces is done and I have left a battery of toxic things in Albuquerque. The keyword is "exhale". I love that word so much. I say exhale a lot because I held my breath in Albuquerque on so many things. Down here in 'Cruces, my breath is free. I am focusing on my simple life and breathing in clean energy and air. Say it with me – exhale!

On the body front, my diet is going great. I exhaled all my fat and I'm on the road to my target weight. Say it with me – exhale!

So far, I have been enjoying a lot of fun events this month including the downtown Las Cruces tree lighting, drinks in a downtown bar, crafts fairs, light displays, and holiday movies. I am going to a holiday concert on the 10th and a street fair on the 11th.

Also, I am ready for the new Sex and the City tonight, Dec 9th - click here for more info!!

I'm just exhaling, living, and loving life!

Life In 'Cruces - November Recap

I must say...I loved November 2021. Most of the years, I hate November but this year was different. I LOVED November and all of the things I accomplished in the month. I finally finished my memoir during the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and I wrote over the monthly goal – 50598 words. The goal was 50,000 words. I have never completed NaNoWriMo – this was my first year. I am beyond myself. This is a major accomplishment for me. Next, I just have to get my memoir ready to send to my cold readers and to start the editing process, which I have already started. I can't believe I got my story out of my mind – my “coming of age” story.

In other news, I also had a great Thanksgiving. I was off Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I stayed at home and enjoyed good food, cold wine, horror movies, and my favorite shows. It was the most relaxing holiday since 2010.

And then there is more...I paid off two bills in November. Two major bills. I also cut my expenses and increased my savings. In addition, I decluttered some, restarted my Special K diet during the week of November 28th, and enjoyed simple things like coffee while watching the sunrise and creating new dishes.

November was the bomb!!

Life In 'Cruces - Thanksgiving and Everything After!

I can’t believe how wonderful this holiday has been. This has been the best Thanksgiving since 2017 when I went to Las Vegas, New Mexico. I relaxed, recharged, and rested all at the same time. Let me give you a brief recap: Wednesday, I got done with work at 11:30 a.m. and then I zoomed home; Thursday, I stayed in bed ALL day; Friday, I hung out in my living room and office all day working on ME projects; and today, I am in bed working on writing projects.

OK...on Saturday, I worked until 12:30 p.m. and then did my laundry. So...Saturday was a little off but Saturday night was all about ME watching old movies, eating, drinking, and loving life.

As for other Sunday plans, I do have to do some cleaning and I need to go and get some skim milk. I am kicking off my Special K diet tomorrow. I am going to do that diet for 25 days and then I’m having R & R days on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. I can’t wait.

Well, it is back to work tomorrow. I am ready though. I am ready to work hard, diet hard, finish my memoir, and finish other projects. I am ready to CRUSH everything!!

Life In 'Cruces - Thanksgiving 2021

Thanksgiving is here – well almost. This week is short and cute, but I am working today because I'm off Thursday and Friday. I can't wait to be off and just relax. I am keeping this holiday simple and relaxing. And no...I am not going to Black Friday. I am avoiding all of the crowds and all of the stores. It is going to be all about Relax and Refresh – R & R.

I am going to do some crafting, writing, a little decluttering, and I am going to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I am going to drink plenty of coffee, wine, booze, iced tea. I am not leaving out of my house.

So...I have to get all of my household chores done early. I am cutting my hair today, cleaning everything, and then I am going to catch up on my shows. Sister Wives' new season starts tonight. I can't wait.

Well...I am wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Life In 'Cruces - Holiday Planning

Holiday Planning 2021 is already done and I am ready for two days of “Rest & Relaxation”. My Thanksgiving holiday is going to be simple and low-key. I can't wait. I am taking off Thanksgiving and the day after. No...I am not going to any Black Friday sales. I am going to sleep in and drink coffee until about 10 a.m. I am then going to get up and have my first meal while watching Dr. Phil.

I am probably going to eat three meals on Thanksgiving and then do some late-night yoga to burn off the calories.

I am working that week from Sunday through Wednesday. I know by Wednesday night, I am going to be tired and sleepy. My main goal over the holiday weekend is to work on my memoir. I am also planning on eating good that Friday and sleeping in. I just want to embrace my simple life that holiday weekend.

I am not going out of town...just staying in and loving my new place. I can't wait for the much needed downtime. I do have to work that Saturday for a few hours on Job III. Afterwards, I am going to binge watch some Discovery+ shows.

I may work Job IV that Sunday...I may not!

Life In 'Cruces - Kickin Off Holidays 2021

Hello November!! The holidays are now here and my little Christmas tree is up and I am sooo excited. I am keeping everything low-key this year. I did not put up a big tree and I did not go overboard on decorating.

My Thanksgiving plans include a simple dinner on Wednesday, turkey sliders and white wine; on Thursday, two Cornish hens with lots of veggies dressing and white wine; and Friday, leftovers and red wine. Click here for the recipe I am using for my Cornish hens.

My Christmas plans include having a fondue party on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Again I am keeping it simple – cheese and chocolate fondues with lots of veggies, fruits, bread, and cubed chicken. Click here for the recipes I am using for fondue.

My holiday theme, as well as my life theme, is “Keep It Simple”. I am not overspending on the holidays. I am focusing on enjoying less and saving more money. One way I am saving money – already having everything in my freezer for both holidays. Yess!!

I am also not buying gifts this year. I am giving money to my mother this year. I am not buying anything for myself. I am saving that money for my surgery and bill payoffs. I am only going to work hard and diet for the few weeks of this year. I am loving the idea of celebrating this holiday season on a low-key basis.

As for as my New Year's plans, I am going to make a big salad and drink some bubbly. I will probably be asleep by 11 p.m. I love bringing in the new year in my bed.

It is all about living a simple and “basic” life.

Life In 'Cruces - Pumpkins and Dark Nights

Happy Halloween Eve!

I know everyone is excited about this “spooky” holiday and all the fun to be had. I kicked off the holiday last weekend while watching the new Halloween movie. The movie wasn't that great...but my dinner that night was wonderful – even though I can't remember what I had.

No pumpkins for me. I didn't even decorate for Halloween (I never do). Well...I don't have any plans for the big day on Sunday. I am going to work for a bit then I am going to work on some projects in my place.

Dark Nights are coming! FYI – the yearly time change happens next weekend. Get ready folks. If we can get through the next few months, the sun will return to its long days.

Now off to some exciting news! You already know what the day after Halloween is – the kickoff of Christmas 2021. November 1st is a very big day for me. I am putting up my Christmas tree and other holiday items. I am not putting up a full tree this year though. I am keeping it simple and cute because I don't want to rearrange my apartment for a full-size tree. Pictures are coming!

As with any new month, I have a list of goals I am going to crush: cut expenses, save money, eat clean, eat less, enjoy my simple life more and more, and enjoy the holiday season.

Be safe folks and be careful tomorrow in the dark!

Life In 'Cruces - Reflecting - One Year Later and Recap

Reflecting – a strong word that means so much to me especially this year. I am truly happy that I was able to keep my eyes on the prize and pull off this move even during Covid. I look back to this time last year and how I had to work from home due to a possible Covid exposure. That was a mess and I wanted to kill the messenger that called me about the exposure. I wanted to drive through that person's place of business. LOL!! But...it was a false exposure.

Reflecting...October last year was filled with buying totes, boxes, trash bags, and booking U-Hauls. This move was more involved than my move from Memphis back in 2009. In 2009, I had one big suitcase and a laptop. This move involved a lot of boxes of stuff and a little bit of furniture. Now...all of the boxes and totes are unpacked and I am slowly getting rid of/using things I have.

Reflecting - The one thing I really loved about this move was walking away from a toxic job and ending a series of other toxic jobs. Now...I like all of my flexible jobs and the freedom to set my own schedule. Yeah Me!!

Reflecting...I even launched this new blog and moved on from Nick's Plates. That was a major move. As I have said back in the day, blogs and online magazines do have an ending point and sometimes you need to move on from those publications. Look at how I ended Detour Memphis Online Magazine back in 2007! That publication ended on a high note and I took a much-needed break from the online world. Now...I am doing what I want online. No set schedule and no team of people.

Reflecting – Leaving Albuquerque was a major move that should have been done back in 2014 but I stayed. I finally made the move to this much smaller city – really a town. Las Cruces is unique and very different from the big city in northern New Mexico.

Reflecting...This time last year was rush, rush, rush. I had to stay focused on pulling off the move. I had to stay focused on paying off as many bills as possible. I still have a few bills to pay off...but I have a plan in place to CRUSH these bills. Now...I am learning to relax and enjoy each day fully. No more rushing, no more boxes, no more totes, and no more Albuquerque.

Reflecting – One area I had already started to reform was toxic folks and situations. I let all of that go. The worse thing in life is a bunch of toxic folks and situations. I let all of that shit go. Now...I am exploring new friendships, areas, situations, and groups. I am more involved in galleries now and creative outlets here in Las Cruces. Everything is new here including the arts, film, markets, etc. I like the fresh scene.

Recap of October 2021 – Alright...time to come to the present time. This month is almost over and it has been good. I started a new additional job, completed a bunch of challenges, I am embracing a vegan lifestyle, I got back into yoga, and I am loving ME!

Life In 'Cruces - What I Am Cooking?

What I am cooking depends on my mood...but it has been all healthy non-meat dishes. It is all about Small Plates and reducing portion sizes. Let me say that again – it is all about Small Plates. I completed the Challenge22 challenge and I restarted it. I am going without meat until Thanksgiving. I feel great and I have dropped down to 215 pounds from 230. Soon...I will be 199 and I can't wait.

What are some of the foods I am preparing? I love smoothies. I make and eat at least three smoothies a week. I use old salad greens, fruit, and tofu in my smoothies. I usually freeze my smoothies to make them more like ice cream. My next favorite meal is a big salad with cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, olives, and lettuce. I make a big bowl of salad weekly and then I portion it out to about two cups. I usually eat salad for breakfast and dinner.

For lunch, I drink a Slim Fast shake or I have a plant-based protein bar. I am busy during the middle of the day...so...a quick meal like a shake or bar keeps me going until dinner.

My “Wonder Drink” is my Apple Cider Vinegar mixture. This mixture (ACV) is my all and all. I mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a large glass of water and a dash of lemon juice. I drink this mixture every night. ACV keeps me regular, lowers my blood pressure, cuts stored fat, and restores water to my cells. I love ACV!!

Now...as far as coffee and tea – I drink one cup of coffee in the mornings and sometimes I will have a glass of iced tea with dinner. I have eliminated multiple cups of coffee due to the high caffeine content. I drink more water now and I do not drink sodas at all.

Update on Challenges – I am still on the Challenge22 program and I love it. The No Spend Challenge is wrapping up tonight and I did great on it. I managed to save some money and I ate what I had in my house. I am kicking off the “Self-Care Challenge” this week. This challenge consists of doing things to better myself. Look for a post about this challenge on my Nick's World blog.

Life In 'Cruces - Cool Nights, Fall Events, and Challenges

Jacket weather is here and Las Cruces nights are cool. I am glad I went with my first thought and got a portable heater to kill the chill in my apartment. Here in the southwest, most apartments use swamp coolers that must be shut down before you can use your heating unit. The landlord sends out a team to convert the air conditioning unit over to the furnace unit. I found out on Friday, the conversion process is not going to take place until around November 1st. I am good because I have my utility heater to keep my place nice and cozy.

As the cool air flows, so does the Fall Events. I have been enjoying a lot of FREE events like art shows, art walks, window shopping, car shows, and speaking events this fall. I am on about five email lists that keep me in touch with free events. I love it...these events also allow me to meet new people and interact with the community. I have a few events coming up this week.

Speaking of events...I missed a car show yesterday though. I instead had a much-needed R & R day. Last week was busy and I just immediately went into R & R mode yesterday. It is all about self-care and resetting!

Now...let me update you on the Challenge22 Vegan Challenge. I am still on the challenge and I haven't had any meat since the beginning of the month. I don't miss eating meat – chicken, pork, beef, etc. Since I have been on this challenge, I noticed I get full quicker and I don't have any stomach issues after eating. I am in love with veggies now more than ever.

Well...this new week brings on another challenge – the “No Spend Week Challenge”. I am kicking it off today, October 10th, and it runs through Sunday, October 17th. The only item I can buy is gas for the car. I must eat whatever I have at home and I must use whatever I have already purchased. I think my hardest day is going to be Friday. I am strong though and I am going to CRUSH both challenges.

Life In 'Cruces - Kickin Off Fall!

Hello Fall!! We meet once again...cool mornings, cool evenings, cold overnites. I am not mad though. I have a slate of things to do and places to see this fall. I am ready.

I kicked off fall by attending an outdoor art event last Friday. It was fun and a great escape from working. Last week was a busy one including crushing work projects, crushing the vegan challenge, and working on a few home projects. Now...it is a new week and a chance to do things I haven't done like visiting different areas of Las Cruces and checking out fall events.

In other news...my “no spending diet” is going well. I am saving more money than I am spending. I am loving this “life change” and my vegan challenge. I am dropping pounds and saving money – two of my favorite things.

Soo...this week is all about exercise and trying new things. This just in...I just checked out Mandy's Farm that is part of NMSU - check it out by clicking here!!

Life In 'Cruces - September Recap

One word for September – Marathon! Why marathon? Because the month was long like a marathon that doesn't end. And September is still not over. I have always had a “love-hate” relationship with September. The month is the last one of summer – the season I love, and the month is the last one before fall. Fall is here and it feels like it. It is currently cool and rainy here in Las Cruces. I have been busy all day working, doing laundry, driving, and meeting new folks. I am finally sitting down!

Back to the recap...I did accomplish a lot this month including starting my vegan challenge and getting my body on a different path. On the travel front, I have really enjoyed my trips around southern New Mexico. Labor Day was fun and relaxing; I spent a lot of time decorating my apartment; I paid off a major bill, and I managed to really enjoy some peace and quiet in my life.

Fall is here. I am looking forward to October and all of the spooky fun that is on the plate. I am not looking forward to cool nights and cold mornings though. So...I have to pull out my jackets, sweaters, blankets, and hot chocolate. The weather is changing even as I type!!

Life In 'Cruces - Wrapping Up Summer – Alamogordo Delights

I am loving the end of summer. The days have been long and the drives have been long and fun. I work in Alamogordo on Thursdays and I finally got to check out McGinn's PistachioLand and Winery. This site is the home of the giant pistachio (photos on the right side). McGinn's is on Highway 70 after you drive through Alamogordo. The place is huge and the nut is really huge. I have to come back to McGinn's to eat and drink since I was technically “working” when I visited the site. Check out McGinn's by clicking here!

After I left McGinn's, I stopped by Heart of the Desert – another tourist spot that features a giant heart. Check out the pictures to the right. Heart of the Desert is another winery that I will be returning to. I love the oversize heart – it is so cute!! Check out Heart of the Desert's website by clicking here!

I love Alamogordo...it is a cute western town with a lot to see. I really love the town's thrift stores. You find a lot of stuff for a little amount of money. My favorite!!

Check out Trip Advisor's Top 15 Things to Do in Alamogordo by clicking here!

Advice on visiting Alamogordo:

  • Leave out of Las Cruces or any surrounding city/town EARLY.

  • Be prepared for a road closure if you are leaving out on Hwy 70 on a Thursday morning – the missile range sends up missiles between 6 and 7 a.m. on a Thursday.

  • Have plenty of gas when you leave out – there are NO gas stations between Organ, NM and Alamogordo.

  • Plan on spending the day in Alamogordo once you arrive in about an hour from Las Cruces.

  • Spend the night, if possible.

  • Avoid driving Hwy 70 at night...it is dark...but pretty.

I am planning on spending a weekend in Alamogordo. I want to check out all of the tourist sites without the hassle of “working.”

My work also takes me to Ruidoso, NM – a blog on that cute town is coming!!

Life In 'Cruces - I-10, Driving, Special Spots

One of my favorite highways in Las Cruces is I-10. The highway merges with I-25 (which runs north to south from Albuquerque to Las Cruces) and runs west to Arizona and beyond. The I-10/I-25 intersection is beautiful – the sky always seems to be blue and the clouds in the sky are fluffy like marshmallows. Check Out the Intersection's website by clicking here!

Once you merge onto I-10, your first exit is Avenida De Mesilla. This exit takes you to the Old Town of Mesilla, New Mexico. It is gorgeous and if you look at the photo gallery on this site, you will find pictures of Mesilla. The Old Town is the historic area of Las Cruces and it is filled with history, places to stay, places to eat, and the famous St. Clair Winery, also known as D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro – check it out by clicking here!!

I love Mesilla and I love St. Clair. This area is one you could spend the entire day in and still have things to see. If you keep driving on Avenida De Mesilla, you will eventually see the Rio Grande River and all the greenery around the river. It is a relaxing area and a perfect getaway from everyday life. Check Out the Rio Grande website by clicking here!!

OK...once you are done in Mesilla, jump back on I-10 and go west. You will see signs for U.S. Highway 70 exit and to your left is a gigantic roadrunner standing next to the rest stop. You must exit Highway 70 to visit this big bird. This is a must-see. Now...back to the highway. Keep going and you will zoom by the Southern New Mexico/Dona Ana County Fairgrounds and the regional airport. The fairgrounds is host to a variety of events including rodeos, fairs, trade shows, and other events. The airport is not a commercial airport, but it is cute to visit. Check out the Southern New Mexico State Fair website by clicking here.

Keep going on I-10 west and you will start to see signs for Akela, New Mexico – a tourist spot that offers a lot of tourist items including odd foods, clothes, shot glasses, pictures, and other novelties. Akela is deemed as a Ghost Town since the only business is the tourist spot immediately off of the highway. Check out the Ghost Town site by clicking here!!

Once you have enjoyed the ghost town of Akela, keep going west my friend to Deming. Now...I want you to stop here and visit this little town for at least a day. And when I say little...I mean little. But Deming is cute and I have a big surprise coming in a few blogs from now about Deming. Check out the town's website by clicking here.

Well...I am going to stop here and let you enjoy Deming and then I will continue this post announcing my big surprise later.

Life In 'Cruces - Labor Day Fun!!

Happy “The End of Summer 2021 Day” … well not really, but folks call Labor Day the end of summer. I never observe this holiday as being the end of my “summer”. Summer continues, for me, until the end of September. I love summer and I extend it until September 30th.

As far as Labor Day, I am working tomorrow and coming home to a list of car projects. So...no holiday for me. I celebrated, a little, on Saturday and of course today, Sunday. I never really liked this holiday and I don't really celebrate it other than relaxing.

In other news, I had a great time at the 16th Annual Franciscan Festival of Fine Arts at the Holy Cross Retreat Center. Look to the right for the photos.

Life In 'Cruces – August Recap and What is Next!

My birthday month has been SOO much fun. I have really enjoyed August 2021. I have one word to sum up the month – Splendid!!

I have had so many great meals, drinks, drives, and buys. I have also worked a lot and got a lot of things done. I love my place and all of the cool things I have found for it. I love my vintage bar, my vintage TV set, my cool curtains, and all of my other 1970s stuff. This month has been the BOMB!

Well...like all good things...August has to come to an end. I hate to see the month go. September is trying her best to come in. I am kicking off September with the Hatch Chile Festival, Saturday, September 4th – 5th.

So...what is next after the Chile Festival? September is all about work, paying off bills, dieting, and exercise. I have to get back on track with EVERYTHING. I didn't venture off track too bad this month (August), but September is going to force me to do right.

Also...September is all about “Self Care” and accomplishing as many goals as I can before Fall swings in with its many cool nights and short days.

Before I go...let me rant about how I am going to handle Fall 2021. Well...not really rant since I am in the “Positive Mode”...I am going to embrace Fall and do lots of yoga as well as keeping a positive attitude. I am not going to be mad about the time change. I am going to take advantage of those long nights...more reading, more writing, more exercising, more living, and more enjoying my life.

Well...let me do some meal prepping and some Dr. Phil watching!!

Life In 'Cruces – Thrifting In 'Cruces

I love thrift stores. I love thrift stores...let me say it again...I LOVE THRIFT STORES. Where can you find anything you want (most of the time) at a fraction of the cost? I love thrift stores. I try to frequent at least four thrift stores a week. I never really set a budget for my thrifting, but I have to be smart and go with my gut. If an item is overpriced, I will leave it and find the item on eBay. I love knowing that I can go to eBay for items that some smaller thrift stores are trying to sell for more than the item's worth.

Thrift stores here in Las Cruces include Goodwill (my favorite), Salvation Army, Savers, and a few small “mom & pop” stores. Always be on guard at small stores. Some owners try to jack up their prices and label items as “antiques” when the items are really just junk. I also love to stop at thrift stores I find in surrounding towns like Deming, Alamogordo, T or C, and other towns. Also, I usually carry cash when I am out thrifting. A lot of stores do not accept credit/debit cards.

Along with thrifting, I also check dumpsters outside of thrift stores to see if I can find any damaged items I can repair. A lot of times stores will toss out stuff they deem as damaged or worthless. Grab those items only if you really want them.

I have even come up with a weekly thrifiting schedule:

Sundays – check Goodwill

Mondays – check Savers

Tuesdays – check Salvation Army

Wednesdays – check small stores in Las Cruces

Thursdays – check out of town stores

Fridays – recheck Goodwill

Saturdays – check as many thrift stores I can find

The Salvation Army here in Las Cruces has the best prices and the best goods. One thing I found out...if you see it...you better grab it. Especially at the Salvation Army.

Well...now I am off to work on some of my thrift store finds!!

Life In 'Cruces – Big 48th - One Week Later!

Well...it has been one week at 48 and I have been CRUSHING a lot of my small goals. I had originally planned to write a post about Las Cruces' nightlife...but I have been so busy working in my apartment and working period. I have not had a chance to really go out to any bars. Covid-19 is resurging and some of the bars/eateries have returned to restrictions. So...I took the money I would have spent out in bars and pumped it in my place. I have also returned to a “spending diet” – I have been saving more than I am spending. Even though I am spending some money...it is not as much as I used to spend. I am liking this diet!

Speaking of dieting...I am on the right path and so far I have dropped about 10 pounds since moving to Las Cruces. I am more active during the day now and the pounds are coming off. I also seem to not really want to eat a lot. I think it is due to wanting to get my place the way I want it. I come home from work around 3 p.m. and I immediately start working on a project. After about an hour, I go on a 30+ minute walk. I love walking and it gives me such a rush. After I return home, I jump right back into a project until it is time to go to bed around 10 or 11.

Today, it is rainy and cool. I am sewing the last set of curtains for the living room and I am so excited. I have enough projects to keep me busy for the next year. LOL!! I am loving it!!

Life In 'Cruces – My Birthday – Big 48th!

I am speechless – in a few hours...I will be 48 years old. I don't feel a day over 22...but I am older. I am thanking the angels and devils for bringing me through life. I am EXHALING all over Las Cruces today. I am playing Whitney Houston right now and EXHALING.

I am in a good place saying goodbye to 47. I have accomplished a lot at 47 and I kept my nose to the ground to get everything done.

Sooo...my Saturday kicked off with doing laundry first and then going on a worksite for a few hours. I like working Saturdays most of the time. Today, I wanted to be free from a work project...but I had to do it! Once that was done, I headed to Goodwill and I found a great bookcase for $5.99, a pillow for $2.99, an album for $.99, and a few more little items. I love my second home – Goodwill.

After my little shopping session, I headed to my storage unit and got some stuff out of it. I don't have much left in the unit. I am soo happy!

On the CRUSHING IT side...I shaved my head, did a facial, took a long shower, and got all of the laundry put away. I have to say...I have so much more energy here in Las Cruces. I think it is due to leaving a set of jobs that were SOOO draining. I also think my old apartment was draining. I am still in a surreal state here in Las Cruces. It doesn't feel real even with a busy work schedule, boxes to unpack, and pounds to drop.

Now...I am working on house projects including designing my custom headboard, unpacking boxes, tossing out items I don't want, and of course...sipping white wine.

Well...tomorrow...I turn 48. I have two years to get ready for the Big 50 and I can't wait. I am going on a picnic tomorrow and I'm attending a concert at Plaza de Las Cruces.

Life In 'Cruces – 'Cruces Living!

Well...one week in Las Cruces and I have been busy as ever but loving it. The week was filled with working, learning new things, unpacking, walking, and living life. I am finally resting today – Saturday, July 31st. It is a cloudy day here and I was going to the Farmer's Market, but it is rainy. So...I am staying in and working on some more boxes.

On the work front...I have already been on a work trip to
Alamogordo, NM. I have some work projects there each week...so I will be traveling there often. Alamogordo is a cute little town to the east of Las Cruces. Look for “On Location” posts from there soon.

On the home front...I love my new place. I am slowly getting it together, but I am in no rush. I have my curtains cut out and I am ready to sew them. I still have a lot of boxes in the storage to bring over and open.

On the learning front...I am learning my way around Las Cruces and other cities/towns around here. Most of the towns in southern New Mexico are small and on or off Highway 70. This highway is a major US road that runs east to west. The only problem with Highway 70 is the lack of gas stations in some of the remote areas. When traveling throughout southern New Mexico, you really have to plan your gas and restroom spots.

On the diet/life front...I am dropping some much-needed pounds. Since I am not in an office anymore, I am getting more exercise and eating less. My fridge only contains water, Slim Fast shakes, salad, and salad dressing. I have also cut back on eating out. I am no longer winded when I climb stairs.

This week has been filled with so many new discoveries. I am excited and resting at the same time. My sleep pattern has also improved – I am really happy about this!!

Well, August is tomorrow...my birthday month starts in a few hours and I am looking forward to 48!! My birthday weekend is next weekend. I am mostly going to work and relax at home. No big plans. I have too much to do in Las Cruces. I am taking off on my birthday though, Sunday, August 8th, and the day after. I am going to go on a picnic and just rediscover myself.

Well...if the rain lets up...I am going to go walking and exploring.

Welcome to MY Life In ‘Cruces!!

Life In 'Cruces – I Did It!!

I am a resident of Las Cruces, NM now and I am LOVING IT!!

I am still in a surreal state...I can't believe after three years of planning, two years of Hell, a pandemic, working multiple jobs, and holding my tongue to keep from cursing folks out...I made the move to Las Cruces.

I am not even going to recap the last three years though. I am on a positive kick now and I am loving this. I can't stop saying it...I AM LOVING THIS!! I spent last night in my big place. It was a night of watching shows I had saved on my Chromebook. I am so glad I have a nice collection of shows and movies.

I slept great and woke up at 7 a.m. – ready to hit the ground running. I have spent the bulk of today shopping and waiting on the Internet installer. I talked to a co-worker today (we have worked together before) and she has my upcoming week planned out. I am excited and ready to work with her.

Now...I am now enjoying Discovery+ and unpacking boxes from my storage. I may go walking in a bit. I am loving my “slow-paced” life now. I may even take a nap!!

Life In 'Cruces – Wrapping Up ABQ!

This Is It!!

I feel like a young adult going off to college. LOL! I am wrapping up my time in ABQ this week. Let me recap the weekend...are you ready?

It all started Friday night...I worked into the evening because I had to get Job II done on Friday and Saturday. Sooo...I worked my butt off Friday night and all day Saturday. Then Saturday evening...I got ready to take the Baby Volvo down to Las Cruces on Sunday.

Sunday started off great. I drove out of ABQ at 6:30 a.m. The drive was wonderful until I got to Dona Ana County and the rain came in. I hate driving in the rain. It was a blowing rain that stayed with me until I got to Las Cruces (Las Cruces is in Dona Ana County – sort of in the middle of the county).

Once I got to Las Cruces, the sun was out and the temperature was OK. I parked the car, got it unpacked, and then headed out for food and coffee. Once I got back in my place, now known as “Nick's Las Cruces Palace”, I ate and enjoyed the peace of my own place. I spent the day unpacking, decorating, cleaning, and making the place my own.

I made myself stay in the entire day except for 30 minutes of running to Wal-Mart. I needed some shower hooks. I am so proud of myself. I didn't spend that much money, I stayed focus on unpacking, I didn't spend the day in the streets, and I didn't drink too much. I had food in the palace and I had a picnic indoors. It was soo much fun.

I worked into the evening and then I stopped. I took a shower and got some rest. I had to leave out around midnight and head to the bus station. I only recommend taking a Greyhound bus if you absolutely have to. You have to be prepared to wait on the bus for a few hours. It is not comfortable and it is slow. But the bus was an easy way to get back to ABQ.

Now...I am working the last days here in ABQ and then it is off to the little town in the south known as Las Cruces.

It feels good to be off on an adventure. I'm finally reconnecting with myself. I am finally back to enjoying the things I used to enjoy like traveling, decorating, crafting, trying new things, and focusing on ME!

Life In 'Cruces – Big Move – Part I

I don't even know where to start...I moved into my Las Cruces place this weekend. It feels so surreal, it feels so refreshing, it feels like a glass of red wine, and it feels like exhaling after holding my breath for soooo long.

My place feels like the next chapter in my life. I feel like I have been spinning my wheels since 2011. I have been doing nothing but working and just going through the motions. This move, this place, and this overall city – Las Cruces is a “fresh start” for me. It is time to put away the negative, it is time to end the daily grind of life, it is time to enjoy life once again, and it is time for ME.

Back to the weekend...it was great...great food, great drinks, great shopping, and great fun in the little town in southern New Mexico. I love the slow pace of Las Cruces. I can't wait to stand in the middle of Main Street and scream. I can't wait to wake up to a different sunrise.

In 11 days, I will be moving to Las Cruces full-time. I am ready to relax and enjoy life. Unlike other moves, I am in no rush to get everything unpacked. I am going to take my time and stop rushing life. I am really going to adopt “manana” - an indefinite time in the future, futurity, time to come, hereafter - the time yet to come.

Well...I am back in Albuquerque for the next week and a half. I have to wrap everything up and put an ugly bow on the stuff.

I am so ready to EXHALE!!

Life In 'Cruces – Lease Is Signed

I did a little BIG thing last weekend...I signed the lease on my Las Cruces apartment. I am moving this coming Friday and I am over the moon. The U-Haul is booked and I have a car trailer for Baby Volvo. I am ready to ride down I-25 with the last load of stuff.

So...let me tell you about the apartment...it is very vintage and fits my 1970s theme. I hate I didn't take any pictures while I was doing the walkthrough. I had to rush through the process because it was raining outside. I had to sign the lease, pay my money, get my key, and rush out of the city to get back to ABQ for work. It rained all day last Monday and the drive back was a rough one. But it was worth it to get in my place. You may be asking...what about the travel trailer? Oh yes...I am still purchasing one and going on the road with many trips.

Check out the latest TT Post...

Well...I have been super busy on this adventure. I am returning to ABQ next Sunday and then I will only have 13 days until my LAST day in Albuquerque!! Saturday, July 24
th will be my first full day living in Las Cruces.

Life In 'Cruces – Summer Road Trip

I am going on a road trip tomorrow, June 27th, I am going to Las Cruces for an appointment on Monday. I am beyond excited to end this month with a road trip. A much-needed escape from ABQ. A much-needed escape to the city I am moving to. My Baby Volvo is READY and excited too!!

I had a great week of unexpected money, unexpected good news, unexpected CRUSHING IT, and the first week of Summer. Summer is official here and I have been working hard getting ready so I can relax in the coming months.

Let me recap the month:

  • My multiple jobs are all transferred to Las Cruces except for one. One job I will still be doing here in ABQ. I am going to do it until I can't do it anymore.

  • I found some great 1970s fabric I am going to use in my new place.

  • I managed to get both cars road-ready for the move.

  • I did cut some of my expenses...but I need to work harder to cut expenses. I just love to shop though. I know I need to save more and spend less.

  • My diet is up and down. I still need to walk more.

  • And finally...I am loving the hot weather. Come on 100+ temperatures.

Life In 'Cruces – I Am Ready for Summer 2021

Summer 2021 is coming in two days. I am on fire this month...here is what is happening:

  1. I returned to a previous job this week that allows me to set my own schedule, take off whenever I want, work alone, and enjoy lunch out every work day. I start next month once I move to Las Cruces.

  2. I CRUSHED it on Job II and Job III.

  3. I got all of my house chores done this week – EARLY!

  4. I only have a few more boxes to pack.

  5. I am taking off Monday to do some training on my previous job. I got to get on my A-Game with this job and blow it out of the water.

In almost a month...I will be in Las Cruces. I am excited but the move really hasn't hit me yet. I turned in my 30+ intent to vacate notice. I also went ahead and got my driver's license renewed. My next big thing is to get my UPS Store mailbox down in Las Cruces.

I must say though...I am so ready to move on with my life. I am leaving Job I and not looking back. I am stepping out of office life for at least two years. I am not going to miss dealing with all of that mess. I am not going to miss any of that mess.

I feel like a spinning wheel. I am still waiting to exhale...I am waiting to scream at the top of my lungs. I am waiting to get all of this bottled up tension out. I am waiting to look at the sky differently. I am waiting to focus, once again, on my success and my moments. I was asked this week if I cared about leaving jobs without notice...I said without a pause, HELL NO! Jobs use you and I use jobs. No job is a career and no career is a job. Read that again!

I am good with this move and this rebirth of Nick A. Davis.

Tonight...I am working on computer stuff and relaxing. I had a 10-hour day today and I am done. It is hot outside, but nice and cold inside. I am loving my relaxing Saturday night!!

On the website front, I am adding some new photos to the online photo gallery this coming week.

Life In 'Cruces – Pride and What?

Well...I skipped the Pride parade this year. I didn't even think about the parade. I worked Job II early Saturday morning and then I came home to do chores. With the move...I don't really have time to enjoy all of the Pride events. I didn't even watch the news to see any highlights from the parade.

I also didn't visit Facebook Saturday morning, afternoon, or evening. I shaved my head, got the patio cleaned off, made a salad, cleaned the bathroom, and did all my ironing. This morning...I got up packing stuff from under the bed. I have a laundry list of things to do today and I am ready!

Looking back at last week... I was busy but not too busy. I CRUSHED a lot of goals and managed to find the 1970s fabric for Little Nicky. I also picked up the wooden numbers “7” and “3” for a special project for my birthday. I also found the Mickey Mouse Disco album from the 1970s. I grabbed it off eBay for only $6. I am slowly collecting all the 1970s stuff for my next place.

Well...let me get back to CRUSHING life!!

Life In 'Cruces – Happy June 2021 and Happy Pride Month!

I am writing this post from a lovely patio in Nob Hill, Albuquerque. I am taking a "Diva Day" to reset my mind, body, soul, and overall EVERYTHING. It has been a big week of working hard, saving money, crushing life, and counting down the days before my big move!

Let me begin with Monday - I had a great holiday of relaxing, sipping wine, and watching my shows. I was in bed the entire day and I loved it. Tuesday - OMG! Work, Work, Work, and more work. Tuesday was like two Mondays combined. But I had no idea that Tuesday would lead to "Kick My Ass" Wednesday. I worked from 6:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. doing two jobs. Job I was all about end-of-month billing and Job III was all about stocking magazines. I love both jobs though. I can't gripe about it...I only have 48 days left before I leave ABQ!

Well...back to my week. Thursday kicked off with me taking Little Nicky to the shop for a timing belt. I was late to Job I and that seemed to toss my entire day into "late mode". I was blessed in the end though - Little Nicky didn't need the belt replaced, the car only needed front brakes and an air filter. My boss took me to get the car after the repairs were done, and I saved $400. I was beyond happy.

Friday came in smooth and I drove Little Nicky to Job I. I worked slowly and relaxed most of the day. Now, I am kicking off Summer 2021 by enjoying myself - a good breakfast, a cocktail, some good coffee, and some light shopping.

Now...it is time for ME!! Time for ME to CRUSH some ME goals this weekend!

Life In 'Cruces –
Memorial Day and Everything After

May has been a month of “Crushing it” in all areas of my life. I kicked off a new diet plan, I worked extra hours on Job III, I resumed the packing process, and I got Little Nicky scheduled for his timing belt change. I have been BUSY as hell!!

On the spending front, I did overspend by $400, but I am OK with it. At one of my spending parties, LOL, I got a gorgeous, white, vintage Mac iBook G4 laptop. I have always wanted one and I found it on eBay for only $63.00. I had to get it...an early birthday gift.

Well...it is now Memorial Day weekend and I am off Monday. I wish I was going out of town, but I am staying in and packing boxes. I am going to grill some tasty treats later on today though. Monday, I am going to stay in bed all day and watch my shows.

So...what is happening after Monday:

  1. Little Nicky is going to the repair shop Thursday

  2. I am booking the second UHaul truck Friday

  3. I am purchasing the ball assembly/hitch for Little Nicky Saturday

  4. "No Spending June" starts Tuesday

  5. June is all about wrapping up loose ends – packing the last of the stuff, paying off little bills, and SAVING money!!

Life In 'Cruces – Summer Is Coming

Spring is still springing, but summer is right around the corner.

The summer of 2021 is all about moving, turning 48, and kicking off the next chapter in my life. I have spent the last 12 years in Albuquerque and I am ready to get out of my daily grind. I am ready for new adventures and the ability to “exhale.” I keep going back to “exhaling” - the ability to breathe out in a deliberate manner.

Check Out – Whitney Houston – Shoop

I have held my breath for so many years. I have worked hard, did what I had to do, worked out problems/issues, and let things go that needed to go years ago. Now...it is time for me and my goals. It is time for me to reinvent myself, my brand, my life, and my happiness.

So...exhaling is my concept – my letting go and picking up my life in 2021. So far...five months in this year...I have been crushing bills, crushing jobs, crushing this blog, and crushing future plans.

On the diet front, I am adjusting to my Keto Diet and all of the foods I need to avoid. It has been going well. YEAH ME!

Life In 'Cruces - Me and Keto Diet

Well...I kicked off my Keto Diet today and so far...so good!!

I have to admit it...I went off the road last year and enjoyed everything from ordering DoorDash to having wine and cocktails daily. I really enjoyed myself last year and most of this year. Now, I am ready to shape up and get healthy before my birthday.

I am turning 48 on August 8th and I want to have more energy and live a healthy lifestyle. I have gone on so many diets over the years and I know I will continue to try different diets until the day I die.

My latest...I am trying the Keto Diet. It is very similar to the Adkins Diet.

So...this is my plan:

  1. I am not going to call it a diet. I am going to call this a “lifestyle change”.

  2. I am going to walk every day for 30 minutes.

  3. I am going to put down the alcohol until August 8th.

  4. I am going to log my food and exercise – I am using the Slim Fast app to do this logging.

  5. I am not going to think about all the food I can't have.

So far...I kicked off this “lifestyle change” today and I feel great. Usually...I have a headache when I start a life change, but today I feel just fine. I worked earlier today and then I did some shopping. I had a Keto shake this morning and an oatmeal protein bar for lunch. I walked for 30 minutes and had a cup of coffee. Now...I am about to start drinking water and get some house chores done.

I am SUPER excited!!
